NurseAid, the 'Edith Cavell fund for Nurses' is the
national charity helping nurses in need of financial help and
support.
We can assist all nurses registered with the UK Nursing and
Midwifery Council, NMC, (together with retired nurses), health care
assistants, (auxiliaries), and student nurses, who are in need of
financial help and support and who meet our criteria, throughout
England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
We believe that no one who is, or ever was, a nurse should suffer hardship. Our aim is to alleviate any such hardship. We do this by giving help and financial support to working and retired nurses, student nurses and health care assistants facing difficult times.
It could be an illness or injury causing early retirement or a long period of absence, family breakdown or other significant problems.
We work with the Royal College of Nursing, (RCN), Unison and other charitable organisations to provide help in a difficult time.
If you want to know if we can help you, click here. Complete our simple check list on-line.

NurseAid's help needed more than ever
NurseAid, the national charity for nurses, has revealed that requests for its financial assistance doubled in 2010.
The organisation, which supports UK registered nurses in financial need, saw applications soar from 699 in 2009 to 1,320 last year.
In January 2011 the numbers tripled compared to the same period last year, with a record 151 requests for help.
Peter Farrall, Chief Executive of NurseAid, said: "The record increase is due to the general economic climate, the rises in the cost of living and the uncertainty over future careers. At NurseAid, we have been working to raise awareness through our website, advertising and by visiting hospitals. All of which has helped us to help more nurses than ever before, but we know that there are many more nurses who could receive our help.
"Our online eligibility checker, on our website, makes it easier for people to see if it is worth applying.
"In 2010 we awarded £486,000 to help nurses in financial need. Around 58 per cent of our beneficiaries needed support because of ill-health or an accident which pushes them to their financial limits.
"Some Nurses need our help for just a short time to get them over a bad patch - others need our financial support for longer."

Thank you for wanting to get involved with NurseAid, we really appreciate your support.
Our ambition is to help as many Nurses as we can - year after year - but we can only do that with your help. We count on individuals and corporate partners to join the NurseAid team and make a positive difference to nurses in need.
One of the simplest ways you can help is by making a donation. No amount you are able to offer us is too small and if you can manage to donate a set amount of money to us each month you can be sure that you're regular giving is making a difference for nurses not just today and tomorrow, but for years to come. regular gifts
Your time can be as important to us as money, and volunteers (offer to volunteer) are of great value to us in many of the events we organise. Running in events such as the London Marathon or Great Northern - or a local fun run could involve lots of people running for NurseAid.
Fundraising should be fun - with your friends, your work colleagues, family -why not get together do something special to honour Britsh nurses! -we can help you all the way to organise your own fundraising event. Perhaps you could do something within your, uni, community, or your hospital to raise money for NurseAid? This helps us not only because it raises vital funds for our work, but it also helps raise our profile and lets the public know who we are and what we do.
For many people, raising money for charity is combined with a personal challenge such as a marathon, half-marathon, climb to the summit of the UK's highest peaks, or a trek along the Great Wall of China. And if you want to do just that get in touch
However, you can also play your part in your everyday working life. If your company asks for nominations for Charity of the Year, or if we are already short-listed and you have the chance to vote - please remember to tick the NurseAid box!
If you'd like any more information about how you can get involved, please call us on 01527 595999 or email Jasmin Rana: jrana@www.nurseaid.org.uk who will be happy to help you.

Cause-related marketing are one of the most effective ways for companies to create a positive perception among existing and potential customers.
Working with us allows companies and other organisations to align themselves with charitable activity which is making a very real difference to the lives of seriously ill children in the UK every day.
We welcome corporate partnerships with organisations who wish to be as involved as possible with our charitable activities - and we also benefit from the profile and fundraising which those partnerships can deliver.
A cause-related marketing campaign with us can create a very powerful message for all kinds of businesses and brands, and allow those companies to communicate their corporate social responsibility objectives to their customers.
]]>Giving shares is a highly tax efficient way to support a charity. Shares worth somewhere around £100 million are given to charities each year. Such donations attract income tax relief, enjoy exemption from capital gains tax- and the tax relief goes to the donor. This allows the donor to choose who benefits from this relief as a result of the charitable support.
A basic rate taxpayer giving shares worth £1,000 can reclaim £220: so to the donor, the cost would be £780 but to us, the value would be £1,000. For a higher rate taxpayer, the cost of giving to NurseAid a gift of shares worth £1,000 would be just £600. In spite of recent changes to inheritance tax, for larger estates giving shares still offers a way to reduce an inheritance tax burden.
We always put money into our Welfare grants budget as promptly as possible, so we sell all these shares straight away and use the proceeds directly to support nurses in need.
A gift of shares of any size can help us. Share giving is a little known but wonderful way to support NurseAid. If you would like to know more, please call 01527 595999 and ask to speak to Donna Treanor, our Fundraising Director.

Making a one-off donation directly to us either by debit/credit card or cheque may not be as much fun as taking part in a challenge event or volunteering, but it could be crucial to some of the nurses and retired nurses we support.
A simple donation to us will mean that a nurse who is in financial need through illness, an accident or through family circumstances can receive the support they deserve. - often after a career of caring, selflessly for others.
You can donate online now, safely and securely.
Make a regular donation by direct debit, (download a DD form) a really simple but effective way to give. Please complete the form and send it to us (freepost address below) or call us on 01527 595999.

One of the most simple and tax efficient ways to give to NurseAidis through your monthly salary - and it helps us because we rely on a regular stream of income to help as many nurses as we can.
Because monthly payroll giving donations are taken from your gross salary, a £10 donation to NurseAid each month would cost you just £8, and only £6 for a higher-rate tax payer. And because it goes out of your salary automatically, you'll hardly notice the difference.
Many companies also choose to match the amounts contributed by their employees, which could make your donation even more valuable.
Ask your company if they run a Payroll Giving scheme. If they do, you simply need to complete the forms they give you. If your company doesn't have a scheme, the Charities Aid Foundation can offer them advice on 01732 520 000 or contact our fundraising team on 01527 595999 or email them.
]]>It may be a fun run, a half marathon or even a triathlon. In Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England, Southern England and Wales - wherever you live there's a chance to help nurses in need of financial support through illness, family difficulties or other circumstances which means they need a helping hand.
Hitting the road for Nurseaid is a great way of raising money. And you can double your satisfaction with the knowledge that you're boosting your own fitness at the same time.
Ask friends and family to sponsor you by the mile, or give a one-off payment instead. - use our Just giving pages to set up your own sponsorship page.
If you are interested in taking part and running for NurseAid in these or any other events, then please call Husne on 01527 595999 or email her.
We are always delighted to welcome new (and returning) runners for NurseAid. Once your place has been confirmed by the organisers, please call Husne on 01527 595999 or email her hbegum@www.nurseaid.org.uk with the following details:
You will then be posted an NurseAid running vest, personalised sponsor forms and details of how to set up your online giving site to help sponsorship become so easy.
]]>
Why not leave your mark on the future by giving a donation to NurseAid in your will? It is a gift which can help those people who have devoted their lives to helping others. We need your support to support them in times of need.
Your thoughtful act can help future generations of nurses to know that through your generosity, NurseAid is there to help them when they need support themselves.
There are a number of different types of legacy gift (bequest) you can make.
NurseAid can provide you with useful information on legacies and making or changing your will. We would be happy to send you our legacy pack (click here), or call Donna on 01527 595999 or email her.
Making a Will is something that most of us put off doing; it seems complicated or we are too young, or we can always do it tomorrow.
But if we want to be sure about how our money and belongings are distributed when we die, then it is vital to make one - for our own sakes and for those of our family and friends.
You can write your Will yourself, but a Will is a legally binding document and so we would recommend that you use the services of a professional to assist you through what can sometimes be a complex process.
In addition to drafting your Will, a qualified lawyer will also be able to advise on ways of reducing your inheritance tax liability - for instance, by making tax-exempt gifts in your lifetime and donations to charities like NurseAid.
These days many people are asking that a donation be given to a charity instead of flowers at a funeral. This is another way you could help NurseAid - see our In Memoriam page.
]]>
Making a donation in memory of a loved one is a positive way of
commemorating a life, whilst helping us to make the lives of those
who have spent their lives caring for others, better.
• Make a donation online
• Make a donation by post or phone
• Gift Aid - Make sure you make the most of your donation
Many people also like to mark significant days like birthdays or anniversaries with a gift to NurseAid.
Once we have received your in memoriam donation, we will always send you a letter of thanks.
We also send a personal letter to the next of kin, which lists all of the donors and the total amount raised in memory of their loved one. Please be assured that individual amounts of gifts are never disclosed.
If you have any questions about making a donation in memory, please contact Fundraising Director, Donna Treanor by email or phone her on 01527 595999.
]]>Fundraising can be lots of fun and provide valuable lessons in community spirit - teaching young people social responsibility and learning of the importance of caring for others.
If your hospital, school or college would like to get involved with fundraising we would love to have your support and you can be sure any money raised will go towards nurses and student nurses who really need it.
If your hospital, school or college has a "charity of the year" we would really appreciate it if you would put NurseAid forward. We benefit a lot from becoming the focus of everyone's efforts for a whole year.

Why do Nurses need financial support from
NurseAid?
Nurses seek our financial support because they are finding it
difficult to cope - frequently this can be due to illness or an
accident that pushes people to their financial limits. Some Nurses
need our help for just a short time to get them over a bad patch -
others Nurses need our financial support for longer. As nurses, we
are used to being the one helping others - it can be very difficult
to seek help for ourselves. No-one ever intends to be in the
situation of having to look for support. At NurseAid we understand
this, and never judge, but always listen with compassion and
understanding. All applications are treated in the strictest of
confidence.
To see some of the stories of people who we have helped. see the
NurseAid brochure
If you are having doubts about applying look at some of our Testimonials and to hear why other nurses have applied to NurseAid.
What sort of help can we give?
NurseAid can make single, one off grants to help
with a variety of things such as adaptations to the home, replacing
white goods, help with decorating etc. In some circumstances we can
help with bills. We ask you what sort of help you require and see
if we can help. In many cases we can offer a regular weekly
grant to help with day to day living costs.
Receiving a grant from NurseAid will not affect your entitlement
to benefits.
NurseAid can also work with other charities to contribute to the
costs of larger items such as installing chairlifts, purchasing
electric scooters, house repairs or adaptations.
What can't we do?
NurseAid cannot help with debts, nursing home fees, bankruptcy
fees or funeral expenses. We cannot help with educational costs or
top up nursing bursaries. We do not make loans and cannot help
people who are not resident in the UK.
Who can we help?
We can help nurses of all ages, (from those who are older and are
living on limited means to those who, through no fault of their
own, are finding it difficult to cope), healthcare assistants
(nursing auxiliaries) and student nurses.

Since 2004 we have given over £2,232,906
See what our regular Grant holders said that their grant was used for (click here)
]]>We give both single and regular grants to nurses in need. They are awarded for a number of reasons
This chart shows the reasons for the grants awarded during 2008
As can be seen the reasons for grants are varied but over a quarter are for general living expenses. NurseAid awards a large proportion of its grant budget to providing regular grants to nurses - almost 300 people receive our regular grants. Over a quarter of these people are living on incomes of less than £8,000 per year.
During 2008 we contacted the people receiving a regular grant to see how the grant helped.
The results, as can be seen below, show that the grants are used for the very basics of life - food, bills, clothing ….
When returning the questionnaire on how their regular grants are used, many beneficiaries took the time to comment on the difference the grant made to their lives:-
"I'm very grateful for all the help NurseAid has given to me. I would be destitute without it. I still have problems coping with my difficulties, but if I wasn't getting your help I'd never be able to manage".
Andrea, 58, Cheltenham - receiving £30 per week
"I am very grateful for my regular grant, before receiving it; it was a struggle especially to have some help with the garden and some one to give me a hand with electricity and minor things in the house. It helps to pay for a bit of help."
Lily, 82, Bexhill on Sea - receiving £30 per week.
"I use my regular grant to help pay towards the basic costs of living (gas, electricity, food, clothing etc.) NB Clothing is usually purchased from charity shops when we can afford it, although this is not very often"
Enid, 76, Norwich - receiving £30 per week.

"Thank you all for working so hard on behalf of me and all the others like me…it brings tears to my eyes that people can be so kind to me, very hard to receive when you're so used to giving."
Audrey, Ipswich
"I would like to thank you most sincerely for the generous cheque that you sent me that enabled me to carpet my flat and also for the wonderful gift of a freezer. I would like you to know how grateful I am for my monthly contribution. It is not just what it is in money but the realisation that complete strangers are willing to help me at a time I need it most."
Caroline, Rugby.
"Dear all, I am choked up by your very kind and generous gestures. I want to thank you most profusely for the cheques and other gifts you have made available to me. I hope and pray that your charity continues to go from strength to strength, the work that you do is extraordinarily brilliant."
Susan, Wiltshire
"Words can't express my gratitude to you. It will make such an enormous difference to my life. I will feel a lot more secure having a panic button fitted and to be able to use Dial a Ride for shopping and to visit the library etc. I'm sure it will give me my confidence back - I feel better already!"
Dorothy, Gloucester
"Thank you with all my heart for the gift of the bed and bedding. I had been sleeping on the floor which wasn't doing me any good at all. Thank you, Thank you."
Colin, Edinburgh
"The children and me want to thank you for the new cooker. It has been a while since I've been able to cook properly and the kids were getting fed up (so was I!!). It is great. Thanks again. If you are ever in the area I'd happily cook you a meal."
Sanjita, Cardiff

]]>Edith Cavell was born the daughter of the Rector of Swardeston, Norfolk, in 1865. She trained as a nurse at the London Hospital. Before the First World War she went to Belgium, where she became the first matron of the Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels.
Following the German Army invasion of Belgium in 1914, Berkendael became a Red Cross Hospital, with German soldiers receiving the same attention as Belgians. Many of the captured Allied soldiers who were there managed to escape, with Edith Cavell's active assistance. She was arrested by the local German authorities and charged with having personally aided in the escape of some 200 soldiers.
Edith Cavell was kept in solitary confinement for ten weeks. She was told that her companions had confessed and perhaps naively, she signed a confession, which was to become the basis for her trial. She was tried by court-martial, found guilty and was sentenced to death. Her execution by firing squad on 12th October 1915 received worldwide press coverage.
In memory of Edith Cavell, the Trustees, in conjunction with Nurses of The Royal London Hospital, lay a wreath at her memorial statue in St Martins Square, London, nearest to the date of her execution in October.
A longer biography and more information on Edith Cavell can be found at www.edithcavell.org.uk
Edith Cavell was also featured in a book entitled Courage: Eight Portraits by Gordon Brown

NurseAid is the working name of the charity 'Edith Cavell Fund for Nurses' named in honour of the heroic nurse who was executed on October 12th 1915 for helping Allied Forces to escape the Germans.
To read about Edith Cavell, her life and work click here. The Edith Cavell Fund for Nurses has existed since 1917.
During the First World War appeals were made in major newspapers for donations to help nurses returning from the war. The Nation's Fund for Nurses was set up to provide relief for individual nurses in times of sickness or disablement. The Nation's Fund also gave an endowment for the new College of Nursing.
In 1922 the Tribute Fund took over the administration of the Edith Cavell Homes of Rest and the charity became known as 'The Edith Cavell and Nation's Fund for Nurses'.
Over the years the fund took over the management of a number of smaller charities helping nurses which were gradually incorporated into the main charity.
In 2002 the charity adopted the working name of NurseAid in order to make the aims of the charity more clear and to make it more accessible to those who may be using internet searches to look for help. At this time the Fund incorporated the charity 'The Nurses Benefit Fund for East Lancashire'. In 2006, the Nurses Fund for Nurses and in 2007, The Groves Trust charities were incorporated.
The objectives of the charity have also been widened over the years in order that it can provide assistance to not only Registered Nurses but also to student nurses in crisis and nursing auxiliaries.
NurseAid continues to grow and to reach increasing numbers of nurses who need our help. If you can support us with a donation to help us support more nurses, please click here.

As the new chair of
NurseAid, I am pleased to welcome you to the NurseAid website.
Our overriding aim is to support student, working and retired
UK nurses in financial need together with health care assistants
(auxiliaries).
We are able to award single or regular grants to help nurses in crisis. Though perhaps unsurprising in the current economic climate, we are experiencing a doubling in demand in the number of applications this year. I am happy to report however that the charity continues its invaluable work in supporting as many nurses as possible
More than a quarter of those who received a regular grant this year were living on incomes of £8,000 per year or less. We regularly review our criteria and policies to ensure that we are able to help those nurses most in need.
We know that only the generosity and support of people like you, helping us with your donations, gifts and fundraising, prevents us from turning away nurses in need - nurses who have selflessly devoted their careers to care for others.
We believe that no-one who is, or who has ever been, a nurse should suffer hardship.
Through your support we can make that belief a reality.
